While many instructional approaches place students at the heart of the learning process as collaborators and active participants, assessment practices have been slow to reflect this shift in students’ roles and responsibilities. And yet, involving students in assessing their own work can improve their metacognitive skills, help them develop evaluative judgment, and foster a deeper engagement with course content. In this talk, CTE Assistant Director Ania Kowalik will examine student self-assessment in the context of learning and assessment theories, discuss the benefits and challenges of involving students in assessment, and present research-based strategies for implementing self-assessment in the classroom.
